One of the books that I am currently reading is Language Visible: Unraveling the Mystery of the Alphabet from A to Z by David Sacks.
I have always been fascinated by alphabets. I first remember becoming aware of them in my parent’s dictionary that I grew up with. In the preface there was a section which gave an overview of the alphabet, its pronunciation, and some of the information about the origin of each of the letters, going back to the Phoenician through Greek, Etruscan, and Roman incarnations. There were references to the Arabic and Hebrew alphabets as well which I was fascinated by.
Language Visible sets a chapter for each of the letters of the modern English alphabet, discussing its origin and path to the present, as well as providing some insights as to particular uses of each letter over the ages as well as discussions of writing and printing.
